Alan Cameron

Clinical Advisor

Alan has been a Subject Matter Advisor to our maternity investigation programme since 2019 and was appointed as Clinical Advisor in 2020.

Alan’s career in NHS practice spanned 28 years as a Consultant Obstetrician in Glasgow. Following this, between 2019 and 2022, he was the national clinical lead for obstetrics to the Maternity and Children Quality Improvement Collaborative (MCQIC), part of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) at Healthcare Improvement Scotland. This work was predominately around stillbirth reduction, neonatal mortality and postpartum haemorrhage.

In 2019, the Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services appointed Alan as the obstetric lead for an independent review of a Health Board’s maternity and neonatal services. This remains an ongoing commitment.

Throughout his career, Alan has held many positions with national and international organisations. Notably in relation to his work with the Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigations (MNSI) programme, he was the co-principal investigator of the flagship Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ project ‘Each Baby Counts’.

He has held numerous research grants and has published over 100 research articles in peer reviewed medical journals, mainly in the fields of high-risk pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy.
