Consultant Midwife, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Sam is a Consultant Midwife specialising in Clinical Effectiveness and Innovation at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a role he commenced in November 2025. He qualified from Birmingham City University in 2012 and has since developed extensive clinical, leadership and academic experience across a range of maternity settings.

Sam began his career at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, progressing from Band 5 to Band 8 in roles spanning intrapartum care, safety improvement and service leadership. His positions included Risk Midwife, Maternity Sign up to Safety Lead and Homebirth Team Leader. He later served as Birth Centre Manager and Lead for Professional Practice and A-EQUIP, driving innovations in safe, woman-centred maternity care.

Alongside his clinical work, Sam has contributed significantly to midwifery education as both Lecturer and Visiting Lecturer at Birmingham City University. He has authored several Trust guidelines supporting midwifery-led care, particularly around the integration of complementary therapies, and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery Studies in 2024.

Sam recently completed the Working with Pain series for The Practising Midwife and published national best-practice recommendations on home birth promotion in MIDIRS. In 2025, he was shortlisted for the University of Wolverhampton Alumni Award for Professional Excellence in Healthcare.
